India’s ‘Sprinter Dadi’; Bhagwani Devi Dagar, aged 95, wins three gold medals for India in Poland

Bhagwani Devi Dagar of Haryana won three gold medals for India in the 2023 World Master Athletics Indoor Championship in Poland at the age of 95. Bhagwani Devi, nicknamed “Sprinter Dadi,” whose athletic career began at 94, improved on her one gold and two silver medals from last year’s championship in Finland by winning first place in the 60m running, shot put, and discus throw categories in the Polish city of Torun this time. All three victories came in the 95–99 age group, with Bhagwani Devi racing in temperatures as low as -7°C.

Bhagwani Devi’s most recent successes drew praise from a wide range of people, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, and Indian boxer Vijender Singh. Bhagwani Devi finished the 60m running event in 36.59 seconds. Her best effort in the shot put event was her first, which measured 2.93m. In the discus throw, she achieved a distance of 4.67m.

With four international gold medals to her record, Bhagwani Devi is now aiming to bring more glory to India in the Asian Masters Athletics Championship, which will be held in the Philippines this November.
