Dublin: The Irish government has announced a significant reduction in speed limits on rural and urban roads, effective from February 7, as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce road fatalities. The initiative comes in response to a worrying rise in road deaths, with further reductions in speed limits planned by the end of the year.
New Speed Limits
The revised speed limits are as follows:
- Rural Roads: Reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.
- Urban Areas: In built-up areas, housing estates, and town centres, the limit will be reduced to 30 km/h.
- National Secondary Roads: Lowered from 100 km/h to 80 km/h.
As part of these changes, the Department of Transport confirmed that existing speed limit signs will be updated. For example, signs previously indicating 80 km/h on rural roads will now reflect the new limit of 60 km/h.
Evidence-Based Policy
The decision to lower speed limits follows extensive research and modelling based on international best practices. The changes have been incorporated into the Road Traffic Act 2024, underscoring the government’s commitment to road safety as a priority.
Rising Road Deaths
Between 2006 and 2021, Ireland experienced a significant decline in road fatalities, with annual deaths decreasing from 365 to 132. This period was recognised as the safest in the country’s history. However, road fatalities rose sharply in 2023, reaching 180—a 36% increase compared to 2022.
Despite a slight reduction in road deaths in early 2024, the government remains concerned about unmet road safety targets. The introduction of lower speed limits is seen as a critical measure to reverse the trend.
A Priority for the Government
Ministerial representatives emphasised that every life lost on Irish roads is a profound tragedy, with lasting impacts on families, friends, and society. Those seriously injured also face lifelong consequences, further highlighting the importance of road safety measures.
The Department of Transport reaffirmed its dedication to prioritising road safety, stating that these measures are intended to protect lives and prevent further heartbreak for families and communities across the nation.
