Dublin: Ireland wholeheartedly welcomed the new British Prime Minister. Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said that Sunak will cooperate with the government. Sunak had already been congratulated by Prime Minister Micheal Martin, who had promised cooperation.
The two governments should have a strong and friendly relationship. Prime Minister Michael Martin and Rishi Sunak have recognised the significance of this. Cowen said that he thinks that the government will give priority to solving the problems related to Northern Ireland. In the coming days, there will be more clarity in this regard. The Northern Ireland protocol’s problems will not be resolved overnight. Therefore, we need to see if an executive can be formed to avoid unnecessary elections. Both governments must consult with the DUP on this issue.
Leo Varadkar, the Deputy Prime Minister, congratulated Rishi Sunak on becoming Prime Minister. Varadkar expressed hope that the UK would work as an ally with Ireland and the European Union to address global challenges such as war, inflation, and global uncertainty.
