Ireland’s Grocery Inflation Hits Two-Year High..

Dublin: Grocery inflation in Ireland has surged to its highest level in two years, reaching 6.5%, according to new data from Worldpanel. The figure is more than double the country’s overall inflation rate of 2.7%, signalling a sharp rise in household grocery costs with no major relief measures announced in the recent budget.

The report estimates that Irish shoppers have spent an additional €18.2 million due to the price surge, as supermarket prices continue to climb across most product categories.

Among premium label lines, the strongest growth was recorded in alcohol (31%), frozen food (31%), and sweet spreads (43%) over the past 12 weeks. Sales of standard own-label goods also rose by 5.6% compared to the same period last year.

Worldpanel’s figures, based on an analysis of over 30,000 grocery products, are considered among the most comprehensive indicators of consumer price trends. Analysts warn that inflation could rise further as Christmas and New Year approach, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the upcoming presidential election.

Meanwhile, spending on promotional offers has increased significantly, reflecting a consumer shift towards value shopping. Promotional sales rose by 21.9%, with overall spending on promotions up 10.2% in the last 12 weeks alone. This represents €71.5 million more spent than during the same period last year, and €145 million more than two years ago.
