Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Labels Ireland as ‘Challenging’ Places in Europe

Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Eli Cohen, has characterised Ireland as one of the more “challenging” European nations regarding their stance on Israel. Several People Before Profit TDs have called for the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador to Ireland, Dana Erlich. However, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has opposed this move, emphasising the importance of maintaining open lines of communication.

Minister Eli Cohen expressed his appreciation for Ambassador Erlich’s unwavering representation of Israel in what he described as one of the more demanding diplomatic environments in Europe. He underlined the efforts made to garner international support for Israel in this context.

In a related article from the Israeli news outlet Ynet, Ireland was labelled as one of the “most hostile countries to Israel in Europe,” with President Michael D. Higgins noted as a prominent critic of Israel on the global stage.

Despite a recent incident in which a shell struck the Irish troops’ Camp Shamrock headquarters in southern Lebanon, the Irish government has announced no plans to withdraw its peacekeeping forces from the region. Rotation arrangements are in place, with the current peacekeepers set to return home and a new contingent scheduled to deploy in early November.
