Israeli-Palestinian ceasefire comes into effect after 11 days of violence

GAZA: A cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas came into effect at 2 am Irish time today. This puts an end to 11 days of violence that has left more than 240 people dead.

The crucial decision was made during the mediation talks between Egypt and Qatar. The Israeli Political Security Cabinet said it has “unanimously accepted the recommendation” for a ceasefire.

The ceasefire is also in response to numerous calls from around the world, including the United States. Earlier, US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he expects a “significant reduction on the path of a ceasefire”.

Meanwhile, Hamas’ rocket attack on Israel continued yesterday. Israel launched airstrikes on the cities of Khan Yunis and Deir al-Balah just before dawn yesterday. At least 5 houses were destroyed in the attack. A shopping mall in Gaza City was also struck by heavy missile attacks.

So far at least 1710 people have been injured in the conflict. An estimated 58,000 Palestinians have fled. More than 50 schools in Gaza were also damaged. Twelve people, including a child, have been killed in rocket attacks in Israel.
