Brussels: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held her first meeting with EU leaders.
Meloni’s first international trip since taking office in late October, aimed at strengthening ties between Brussels and Rome, will boost Meloni’s popularity.
Opposition leaders have criticised the fact that if Meloni, a complete nationalist, is elected, relations with the European Union will deteriorate.
Before departing, Meloni tweeted, “Italy’s voice in Europe will be stronger: Europe will stand united to face issues such as the energy crisis.”
To deal with the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, soaring energy prices, and rising inflation, we must stand together. “Unity is Europe’s strength,” Meloni said.
Meloni, who has previously called for Italy to withdraw the euro and has been critical of the EU, has surprised many by adopting a more accommodating stance in the interim. Political analyst Lorenzo Codogno believes Meloni, Italy’s first female prime minister and leader of the country’s first far-right-led government since World War II, will take a diplomatic approach.
