Lionel Messi, who left Barcelona as a free agent after 21 years, has reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract with an option for a third season. The 35-year-old will now play for PSG alongside two star strikers, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.
A statement from the club said: “The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is justifiably considered a legend of the game and a true inspiration for those of all ages inside and outside football.
“The signing of Leo reinforces Paris St Germain’s aspirations as well as providing the club’s loyal fans with not only an exceptionally talented squad, but also moments of incredible football in the coming years.”
Leo Messi, who scored 672 goals in 778 games for the Spanish club FC Barcelona, arrived in France on Tuesday, two days after bidding an emotional farewell to the club.
According to a statement from FC Barcelona, a new contract agreement had been reached between the club and Messi, but “financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations)” made it impossible for the player to remain with the club.
“I am excited to begin a new chapter of my career at Paris Saint-Germain,” Messi said.
“Everything about the club matches my football ambitions. I know how talented the squad and the coaching staff are here. I am determined to help build something special for the club and the fans, and I am looking forward to stepping out onto the pitch at the Parc des Princes,” he added.
The arrival of Messi, who won four Champions Leagues and ten domestic league titles with Barcelona, would boost Qatari-owned PSG’s hopes to win the prestigious European Champions League for the first time. The club has confirmed that Messi will wear the number 30 shirt.
Other notable players that joined PSG on free transfer this summer were Spain defender Sergio Ramos, Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, and Italy’s Euro 2020-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
