Mass layoffs at Twitter: Half of employees may lose their jobs

Dublin: It’s been a rough time for workers at Twitter, the social media firm acquired by Elon Musk. The company is mass-laying off employees. Termination notices are served by email. Twitter. There are signs that a significant portion of the social media company will be cut as well. According to documents, nearly half of the company’s 7,500 employees have already been laid off.

On their way to work, Twitter employees receive layoff notices. The notices are received as there is no need to come to the office and return home. The dismissed individuals have been removed from the company’s email contact list. Therefore, it is not possible to contact the company through email. Passwords have been changed as well. Many employees are venting about their issues in other social media groups.

There have been no layoffs in the advertising, marketing, or human resources divisions of the company. Musk previously directed Twitter’s teams to find ways to save up to $1 billion in annual infrastructure costs.

Despite layoffs, Twitter has typically remained involved. The company has $300 million users.

Will the court step in?

Employees have sued Twitter after the company conducted mass layoffs without providing the required 60-day notice, in violation of federal and California law.

San Francisco has approached a federal court seeking an injunction against the dismissal of the employees pending the hearing of the case.

Twitter’s  stance

Elon Musk previously fired Twitter’s CEO, as well as its top finance and legal executives. According to an email from the company, the layoffs are part of Twitter’s efforts to achieve financial health. To ensure the security of employees, Twitter’s systems, and customer data, offices will be temporarily closed. Employees who have not been terminated will be notified via their work email addresses, and further decisions regarding terminated employees will be communicated via personal email, according to the company.

Senior employees claimed that managers were forbidden from calling team meetings or communicating with employees.

Dublin and Twitter

Twitter’s Dublin office employs approximately 500 people. In Ireland, there have been no layoffs. However, there are concerns that approximately 250 people in Ireland will lose their jobs. Twitter’s Dublin office is currently not open. Employment Minister Leo Varadkar and Minister Michael McGrath both expressed disappointment with the developments at Twitter.

Employees in Ireland who are out of work are offered benefits such as statutory redundancy and one month’s pay. Employees will also be required to take gardening leave during the notice period. The company has informed the employees that they will be consulted before being fired. According to company sources, no decision has been made regarding the employees in Dublin.
