Met Éireann issues Status Yellow wind warning for eight counties

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for eight counties in the country’s west for Thursday.

The warning was issued for Cork, Kerry, Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo due to the possibility of an Atlantic front bringing strong winds to coastal and exposed mountain areas with average speeds of 50 km/h to 90 km/h or even 100 km/h.

“The forecasted unseasonable severe weather conditions will coincide with spring tides and rough to high seas, with the potential for wave overtopping and hazardous coastal conditions,” Met Éireann warned.

A Yellow Wind Warning will be in effect from 6am tomorrow until 3pm for Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo. Co Kerry will be under warning from 8am until 11am. Co Cork will also see a Yellow Wind Warning, which will be in effect at 9 am and will last until 1 pm.

According to Emer Flood of Met Éireann, Thursday will be an unseasonably windy day. She said tomorrow will be an extremely windy day with strong and gusty southwest winds reaching gale force on Atlantic coasts with very rough waves.

The Meteorologist said: “There will be some rough conditions across inland lakes too. Showery outbreaks of rain will move into the western half of the country in the morning, heaviest in the northwest and will extend eastwards into the afternoon.

“There will be some good sunny spells early on in the east and later across other areas. Showers will become well scattered at that point with moderating southwest winds and temperatures of 16C to 19C.”

The Irish Coast Guard advises the public to avoid visiting exposed beaches, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, and promenades.

Swimmers, water sports enthusiasts, and boat operators are also urged to exercise extreme caution.

The Coast Guard urged people to “stay back, stay high, and stay dry,” and to contact 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard if they saw anyone in trouble.
