North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile on South Korea, leading to air raid warnings

North Korea launched three short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Wednesday, prompting South Korea to issue an air raid warning for its eastern island, further raising tensions between the adversaries.

The launches came just hours after North Korea issued a veiled warning to use nuclear weapons to force the United States and South Korea to “pay the most horrific price in history,” an escalation of its inflammatory language aimed at the continuing large-scale military drills between the two countries.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea stated in a statement that North Korea launched the missiles from its eastern coastline district of Wonsan on Wednesday morning.

One of the missiles fell in international waters 26 kilometres (16 miles) south of Korea’s eastern sea border and 167 kilometres (104 miles) northwest of South Korea’s Ulleung island, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It stated that it had issued an air raid warning for Ulleung Island.
