NPHET confirms COVID-19 spread in Ireland is declining rapidly; 75 deaths and 1318 new cases confirmed yesterday

DUBLIN: Indications are that Ireland is becoming free from the intensity of the COVID-19 spread. The National Public Health Emergency Team confirmed that the virus spread continues to fall sharply.

Prof. Philip Nolan said that the incidence rate of the virus is decreasing significantly each week. There has been a 6 to 9% reduction in infection per day. He added that the reproductive rate (R) number of the virus is now below one. As of yesterday evening, 1,284 patients were treated in hospitals, with 188 in intensive care, down 15 on yesterday.

An average of 1,188 cases were reported in the country in the last seven days. In January, it was 6,520. Prof. Nolan also mentioned that less than ten cases were registered every day at the end of June.

He said there was also a decline in hospital admissions. Last week it was 160 per day and now it is averaging 70. For the first time this week, the number of patients in the ICU also dropped. Infection is rapidly declining in people of all ages. He also said there has been extraordinary progress in people between the ages of 19 and 24. Prof. Nolan said the incidence of the virus was very high in people aged 85 and above, but it was slowly declining.
