Over a two-year period, the University of Galway overpaid an employee by €100,000

According to accounts provided to the Oireachtas this week, the University of Galway recently overpaid an anonymous employee by more than €100,000.

In accordance with the notes, the overpayment happened between January 2019 and February 2021, and the institution is “attempting to agree on a payback plan” with the person.

This week, the Oireachtas received its annual report and consolidated financial statements for the fiscal year ending September 2021.

The Comptroller and Auditor General, who audited the accounts, recognised the overpayment and linked it to “weaknesses in system controls” at the college.

According to the Comptroller and Auditor General, the institution discovered that an employee had been overpaid by just over €100,000 during that fiscal year.

The employee is not identified in the report, and the Comptroller and Auditor General stated that the college had “taken actions to tighten its procedures in order to avoid a recurrence of this issue.”

According to a university representative, the overpayment was picked up internally and will be “recouped in full.”
