Powerful Earthquake Strikes Northern Afghanistan, Killing 10 and Injuring Over 260

A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan, causing widespread devastation and loss of life. At least 10 people have been confirmed dead, and more than 260 others have been injured, according to official reports.

The earthquake hit Mazar-e-Sharif and surrounding areas — a region with a population of more than 523,000 people — late on Friday. The tremors caused severe damage to homes and infrastructure across parts of Balkh and Samangan provinces, Afghanistan’s Taliban-run Ministry of Defense said.

Authorities confirmed that rescue and relief operations are underway, led by the Afghan army. The Ministry of Health stated that emergency medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas and that medicine, food, and other essential supplies are being distributed to victims.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has issued an orange alert, indicating the possibility of significant casualties and economic losses. Videos circulating on social media show collapsed buildings and rescuers pulling people from the debris. This latest disaster follows another major earthquake in August, which killed nearly 1,000 people and caused widespread destruction across the country.
