Revenue seized millions of illegal cigarettes on a container from Asia in Dublin Port

DUBLIN: Customs officers seized a huge haul of 10.5 million cigarettes on a container at Dublin Port as part of Revenue’s ongoing operations aimed at the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

It is reported that the tobacco products were found in a container that had come from Asia via the Netherlands.

The search was carried out yesterday with the help of Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner and detector dog Waffle, a Revenue spokesman said.

The cigarettes hidden within the shipment that manifested as furniture are estimated to have a retail value of €7,350,000. This amounts to a potential loss of €5,754,000 to the Exchequer, a spokesperson said.

“The illegal cigarettes, branded ‘Blue River’ were discovered when Revenue Officers searched a container from Vietnam that had arrived into Ireland on a vessel from Rotterdam,” he added.

The spokesperson also said that the investigations are ongoing.
