Rishi Sunak is set to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, with the backing of over 145 lawmakers
London: Rishi Sunak, who is of Indian origin, may become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Former British Prime Minister and Chancellor Boris Johnson withdrew his candidacy for Prime Minister after receiving the support of 145 lawmakers.
A 42-year-old man, Rishi Sunak, who was the finance minister in Boris Johnson’s cabinet, is expected to take over as prime minister on Monday. When this is implemented, he will become the first Asian Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Rishi was given another chance when Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned after only 44 days in office. Rishi Sunak is now in a fight with Penny Mordaunt. However, Penny does not have the same level of support from lawmakers as Rishi.
Meanwhile, former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that he is prepared to run and win in the 2024 general election. Effective governance cannot be achieved in the absence of a unified party in Parliament. He is far behind former finance minister Rishi Sunak. So there is no intention of proceeding with the nomination. Johnson stated that he would provide full cooperation to the winners.
Several media reports suggest that the Prime Minister’s announcement will be made today. Sunak currently has the backing of 146 conservative lawmakers, compared to 57 for Johnson and 23 for Mordon.
