“Rohan Bopanna, 43-Year-Old Australian Open Doubles Champion, Aims for Wimbledon Title Glory”

Indian tennis ace Rohan Bopanna, determined to extend his historic achievements, sets sights on Wimbledon’s doubles title after becoming the oldest major men’s doubles winner at the Australian Open last month alongside partner Matthew Ebden. At 43, Bopanna holds the record as the oldest tennis world number one and is eager to make further history at Wimbledon.

Reflecting on his connection with Wimbledon, Bopanna expressed his close ties to the prestigious tournament, which was the only Grand Slam televised during his upbringing in India. Despite reaching the semi-finals in 2023, he aims to surpass that performance this year.

Bopanna, known for his resilience, clinched his first doubles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, overcoming a 61-attempt journey with 19 different partners. Recounting his historic win, he revealed taking a calming nap to ease nerves before the final match against Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

Partnering with Ebden since the beginning of 2023, Bopanna has broken several records, including becoming the oldest Masters champion, the oldest Grand Slam finalist, and the oldest player to win a match at the ATP Finals.

With a winning mindset, Bopanna emphasised his enjoyment of the sport and the thrill of competing against the world’s best. He stated, “Today I feel when I’m at the top, there’s no real reason to stop, and I really feel I’m enjoying travelling still. I’m still competing against the best in the world, winning tournaments, now winning the Grand Slam also. I really feel as long as I enjoy it and I’m not forcing myself to be there, I can still keep going as much as possible.”

In a distinguished meeting in New Delhi on Friday, Rohan Bopanna had the honour of presenting Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the racket that secured him the Australian Open 2024 title last week. Bopanna, who shared images of the encounter featuring the Australian Open Cup and the championship racket, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for recognising his triumph in Melbourne.
