Sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in India and Gulf countries; daily number of cases in India exceeds one lakh

There has been a huge increase in COVID-19 cases in India and the Gulf countries. In response to reports of numerous cases, officials in these countries have released tighter restrictions and warnings.

The daily number of COVID-19 cases in India exceeds one lakh. For the first time in the country, the number of cases per day has crossed one lakh since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1.03,558 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. The Indian government has also confirmed 478 more deaths. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 1,25,89,067.

Currently, 7,41,830 people are being hospitalized in the country. The current death toll stands at 1,65,101. With the election campaign in full swing in various states, the numbers are likely to rise further in the coming days.

The number of cases is alarmingly high in eight states – Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra accounts for 60% of the total cases in the country. Eight of the ten districts with the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country are in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra has imposed strict restrictions on the growing number of COVID-19 patients. Night curfews and weekend lockdowns have been announced in the state. The weekend lockdown is from 8pm on Friday to 7am on Monday. The restrictions will take effect on Monday.

In the Gulf, Oman and Saudi Arabia saw the largest increase in the number of COVID patients.

Meanwhile, Britain has imposed travel restrictions on people, including those from Pakistan and Bangladesh. India may soon be included in this list.
