Spain’s King, Queen, and Prime Minister Met with Anger from Locals in Flood-Stricken Town as Death Toll Tops 210
In a powerful display of anger, locals in flood-stricken Paiporta, Spain, hurled mud and insults at King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Sunday. The region, devastated by flash floods, has seen at least 217 deaths, with many still missing. Security had to shield the royal couple as the crowd voiced their frustration over the government’s response, calling out “murderers” and reportedly shattering a window of Sanchez’s car.
King Felipe acknowledged the public’s frustration, emphasising the state’s commitment to supporting the affected, while regional leader Carlos Mazon expressed understanding of the “social anger.” Prime Minister Sanchez, condemning the violence, deployed an additional 10,000 troops to the Valencia region, marking Spain’s largest peacetime mobilisation.
Volunteers have been instrumental in recovery efforts, despite official advice to avoid crowded areas. Meanwhile, new storms have prompted a “red alert” for Valencia, where authorities have restricted the number of volunteers allowed to enter the hardest-hit areas.
The death toll remains uncertain as authorities work to clear vehicles submerged in tunnels and garages, with scientists noting climate change’s role in intensifying such extreme weather.
