Taoiseach will travel to UK tomorrow to meet with Boris Johnson

DUBLIN: Taoiseach Micheál Martin is travelling to the United Kingdom tomorrow to meet with the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The meeting is expected to take place tomorrow at Chequers, the British Prime Minister’s country house.

According to government sources, the talks between the two leaders are likely to focus on:

● Range of topics concerning Northern Ireland’s peace and stability

● Strengthening British-Irish relationship

● Response to the COVID-19 pandemic

● Recent unionist and loyalist unrest over the protocol to the EU-UK withdrawal treaty

● Lifting of travel restrictions between Ireland and Britain by next month

● Ballymurphy massacre

Boris Johnson apologised yesterday on behalf of the UK Government for the killings that took place in Ballymurphy, Belfast, in 1971. Johnson apologised during a phone call with Stormont First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.

A Government spokesperson said in a statement this evening that the visit has been scheduled for some time.
