Terrifying ‘progress’: Ireland has highest incidence of COVID-19 in European Union
DUBLIN: The spread of coronavirus in Ireland is once again alarming. The country now has the highest incidence of COVID-19 in the European Union. Cyprus was previously in first place, but that ‘honour’ now belongs to Ireland. The shocking figures were released by the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC).
According to the ECDC report, the 14-day incidence rate in Ireland is 504 cases per 100,000 people. Ireland’s leap comes at a time when the EU average is 199 per 100,000. Yesterday, 1414 new virus cases were reported. There are 53 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, 55 of whom are in the ICU.
Ireland is placed in the red zone due to the increase in infections and hospital admissions. At the same time, there is a slight decrease in the average number of infections per week. However, there are concerns that this shortfall will disappear with the opening of classes for third-level students later this month. Another alarming fact is that the number of patients is increasing despite the high vaccination rate.
Statistics show that most of the victims are young people. However, the COVID-19 death rate is low, at 6.65 per 100,000. 87.1% of people over the age of 16 in the country have been fully vaccinated.
