Tokyo Olympics: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins India’s first medal

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the country’s first medal in the women’s 49 kg category at the Tokyo Olympics. Chanu opened India’s account with a silver medal on Saturday, ending the country’s 21-year wait for an Olympic weightlifting medal.

China’s Zhihui Hou won gold in the same category, lifting a total of 210 kg, while Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah won bronze.

Chanu lifted 202 kg to become the second Indian weightlifter to clinch an Olympic medal, after Karnam Malleswari’s bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Chanu, who lifted 84 and 87 kg, failed to lift 89 kg, while Zhihui lifted 94 kg to set an Olympic record in this category.

Mirabai Chanu is India’s lone weightlifter at the Tokyo Olympics. Chanu won gold at the World Weightlifting Championships in 2017, then gold at the Commonwealth Games a year later and bronze at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 2019.

The 26-year-old also competed for India in the women’s 48 kg weight category at the Rio Olympics but failed to win a medal. After five years, the Manipuri girl roared back, making her country proud.
