US Airstrike in Yemen Kills at Least 24, Targets Houthi Rebels
Sanaa – A US airstrike on Houthi militant targets in Yemen has resulted in at least 24 deaths, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. According to Houthi officials, the strike, which targeted rebel-controlled areas in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, left nine people dead and nine others critically wounded.
The Houthi Health and Environment Ministry claimed that the casualties included civilians, while reports from AFP correspondents in Sanaa indicated that three explosions were heard, with smoke rising from a residential district in the northern part of the city.
Houthi Attacks and US Retaliation
The Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, have been carrying out attacks on Israeli interests and commercial shipping in the Red Sea since the beginning of the Gaza war. These strikes have raised international concerns about regional security and maritime trade stability.
In response, US President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered a decisive military operation against Houthi forces in Yemen. Taking to social media, Trump stated that the Houthis continue to attack and loot American ships, aircraft, and drones, posing a direct threat to US interests in the region.
Trump also accused the Iran-backed Houthi rebels of jeopardising commercial and military operations in the Red Sea, emphasising that for over a year, no commercial vessel flying the US flag had sailed safely through the region.
Trump vowed that Houthi attacks on US ships would not be tolerated and declared that retaliatory strikes would continue until the threat was eliminated. He warned the rebels that they would experience unprecedented consequences if they persisted with their aggression.
