Veteran CPI(M) leader and general secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72 after battling pneumonia at Delhi’s AIIMS. He had been admitted to the hospital on August 19 and was in the ICU before succumbing to his illness. Yechury’s family has donated his body to AIIMS for medical research, and his body will be at the CPM headquarters for two days for people to pay their respects before being returned to the hospital.
Yechury, a prominent figure in Indian politics, was a Rajya Sabha MP from 2005 to 2017 and a member of the CPI(M) Politburo for over three decades. He was well-regarded for his coalition-building efforts, notably contributing to the formation of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in 2004.
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, with leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh, and Mamata Banerjee expressing their condolences, remembering him as a principled leader and a significant force in national politics.
