WhatsApp introduces ‘View Once’ feature: Photos and videos will disappear once viewed

WhatsApp will soon introduce a new ‘View Once’ feature aimed at enhancing user privacy. The new feature lets WhatsApp users to send images and videos to recipients that they can only view once.

Users will be able to share photos and videos with the new feature, and they will automatically disappear after the receiver has viewed them once.

Once disappeared, the message will no longer be accessible, and message threads will be clearly marked “opened” to avoid confusion about what happened in an individual chat.

The feature is already available on a few social media platforms, including Snapchat and Instagram.

WhatsApp promotes the feature as a safer way to transfer sensitive information without it being saved or viewed repeatedly. Yes, images or videos will not be saved to the recipient’s Gallery, and they will be unable to forward it through the app as well.

Also, if the media content sent using the feature is not opened within 14 days, it will be removed from the chat.

However, it is known that WhatsApp does not restrict recipients from taking screenshots of the content sent by using the ‘View Once’ feature, thus the platform advises users to only share images and videos using the new feature to trusted individuals.

“While taking photos or videos on our phones has become such a big part of our lives, not everything we share needs to become a permanent digital record,” the Facebook-owned messaging giant said in a blog post.

“On many phones, simply taking a photo means it will take up space in your camera roll forever. That’s why today we’re rolling out new View Once photos and videos that disappear from the chat after they’ve been opened, giving users even more control over their privacy,” it added.
