Wildfires in Los Angeles Claim Lives and Destroy Homes, Officials Confirm
California is grappling with a devastating wildfire crisis, with Los Angeles County particularly hard-hit by the Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire.
The two fires, which have collectively burned 34,000 acres, are among the most destructive in Los Angeles County’s history. The Palisades Fire, located between Santa Monica and Malibu, has destroyed 5,300 structures, while the Eaton Fire near Pasadena has damaged or obliterated 4,000 to 5,000 buildings. Combined losses are estimated between $135 billion and $150 billion, according to AccuWeather.
In response, President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in California, ensuring federal support for debris removal, temporary housing, and emergency operations. Governor Gavin Newsom deployed the California National Guard to assist with evacuations and security. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass vowed to rebuild but faced scrutiny over the city’s preparedness.
The fires have displaced tens of thousands of residents and endangered critical infrastructure, including the historic Mount Wilson Observatory. While firefighters successfully protected the observatory, nearby areas remain at risk. Tragically, many residents returned to find their homes reduced to rubble, with some losing their lives in desperate attempts to save their properties.
Efforts to contain the blazes continue, supported by firefighters from across the U.S. and Canada. Aerial suppression operations have intensified, and officials report a temporary reduction in the previously high winds. However, a new fire, the Kenneth Fire, has emerged near Calabasas, threatening the Hidden Hills community.
