Wexford: In a concerning incident at Rosslare Europort in Wexford, 14 illegal immigrants, comprising nine men, three women, and two girls, were found inside the refrigerated trailer of a ship. Justice Minister Helen McEntee described the situation as highly perilous, emphasising the potential dangers involved, as previous cases in similar circumstances have resulted in fatalities. The Minister confirmed that the Gardai, in collaboration with international agencies, are actively investigating the matter.
Fortunately, the health condition of all individuals found is reported to be satisfactory. The Garda indicated that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The discovery occurred after someone alerted the UK Coastguard via 999 from the ship’s refrigerated trailer around 1 a.m., citing difficulties with breathing. Gardaí and ambulances were promptly dispatched to Rosslare Europort, where the ferry was docked, and a medical team attended to the migrants. Subsequently, the individuals, believed to be of Kurdish and Vietnamese origin, were transferred to a processing center.
Prime Minister Leo Varadkar underscored the importance of prioritising humanitarian considerations for the migrants, ensuring their well-being, and health assessments. The initial focus is on facilitating voluntary returns to their home countries. However, if any of the individuals submit a refugee application, it will be duly considered. Prime Minister Varadkar pledged to provide further updates on the situation as more information becomes available.
