No customer allocated free NCT test, despite a promise in the NCT customer charter

DUBLIN: The Road Safety Authority’s promise to provide customers with a free NCT test if they have to wait longer than the specified time for a vehicle test has come to naught.

Even though the delay continued, not a single person got this free offer. The test has a maximum waiting time of 29 days. Many drivers, however, have been waiting for the test for months. But the experience is that no one gets this for free. There has been strong criticism against this, including from political centres.

The authority promised to allow the test free of charge if the NCT failed to provide an appointment within 28 days. The NCT Customer Charter also states that those who are unable to schedule an appointment within 28 days will be given a free test, unless certain conditions apply. The authority also provides free online tests. The majority of customers receive appointments within four to five weeks. Others take longer to get an appointment.

In October 2022, the free test offer was reintroduced. According to the authority, the contractor who performed the test will bear the full cost of this. A Fianna Fail spokesperson and parliamentary committee member, James O’Connor, demanded that the NCT comply with the offer of free tests.
