Widespread checks by social welfare officers continue to catch illegal workers

Dublin: Widespread checks by social welfare officers continue in partnership with gardaí to catch people working illegally. Inspections will take place at various locations, on various days, and at various times. Special powers have been granted to officials in social welfare legislation for this purpose. To detect fraud and abuse of the social welfare system, the Department of Social Security conducts multi-agency vehicle checks.

An Garda Siochána MAVCs carry out regular checks across the country to catch people working in and travelling to and from vehicles, including vans, lorries, and taxis. The inspection seeks people who travel and work in commercial vehicles, haulage, and taxis.

The Social Protection Department’s Multi-Agency Vehicle Checks (MAVC) centres for checks. Social welfare officers mainly check whether those claiming unemployment payments are working.

Members of Revenue and Customs will also man the check posts. Driver frauds such as vehicle tax evasion, road traffic safety violations, revenue and customs violations, and social welfare frauds will be detected.
