Concerns Rise Over Surge in Suspected Arson Attacks Targeting Asylum Centres in Ireland

In the past month, Ireland has witnessed four suspected arson attacks on refugee and asylum centres, prompting fears of escalating violence during the holiday season. The most recent incident occurred at a disused hotel in Rosscahill, Co. Galway, drawing condemnation from Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman, who expressed concerns about the government’s ability to accommodate new arrivals amidst heightened tensions.

The attacks, including one in Dublin and another in Wexford, have alarmed authorities, with ten properties facing criminal damage or arson attacks this year alone. Justice Minister Helen McEntee acknowledged the challenge of preventing future incidents, stating, ‘I can’t make any commitment on any situation. What I can do is say every effort is being made to protect people, not just those in accommodation but to protect people right across the country.’

While condemning the arson, local opinions vary, with some expressing fear over potential increases in asylum seekers in their communities. Concerns also arise about the involvement of far-right groups, with sources indicating organised efforts led by high-profile protesters and the use of younger individuals to carry out attacks.

Integration Minister O’Gorman labelled the recent arson as ‘deeply sinister,’ emphasising the need for adequate communication and community engagement. However, challenges persist in managing the influx of international protection applicants, raising questions about the government’s reliance on the private sector for accommodation.
