Ireland Introduces Expedited Process: Work Permit and Visa Combined in 20 Days

Dublin: Neale Richmond, the Minister of State for the Department of Enterprise, has announced plans to streamline the process for eligible individuals seeking employment in Ireland, aiming to provide a general work permit and visa within a 20-day timeframe. This initiative includes simplifying the procedures for obtaining a visa and work permit, with the permit initially granted for one year and the option for employers to extend it.

Concurrently, recent data indicates a significant uptick in work permit applications in Ireland following the enactment of new legislation, alongside salary increases. In the previous month alone, the Enterprise Department received 5,366 applications for work permits. Among the most sought-after professions are nurses, healthcare assistants, chefs, computer programmers, and doctors.

Despite this surge in work permit applicants, Ireland continues to grapple with a shortage of skilled workers from within Ireland, the European Economic Area, and the UK. Consequently, companies are increasingly turning to foreign workers to address staffing needs. Notably, last year saw 4,500 nurses and over 2,500 healthcare assistants arriving in Ireland for employment, albeit fewer than in the preceding year.

Moreover, there has been a notable influx of individuals into sectors such as construction and financial services, attributed in part to the allure of increased minimum wages and other benefits. As Ireland’s economy and businesses expand, the country, like its European counterparts, faces a significant shortage of skilled labour, underscoring the need for initiatives to attract and retain talent.
