Ireland’s Prime Minister Greenlights Foreign Refugee Agreements..

Dublin: Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has voiced his support for considering applications for immigration from individuals residing illegally in Ireland, particularly those originating from countries outside the European Union. Varadkar made this statement during his attendance at the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) election conference in Bucharest, Romania.

Centre-right parties, including the EPP, are increasingly embracing global migration as part of their policy agenda. Varadkar’s unexpected proposal comes as immigration takes centre stage in the upcoming European Parliament elections in June, with immigration featuring prominently in the EPP’s election manifesto.

The EPP’s manifesto outlines a commitment to ending agreements with third countries that restrict asylum seekers’ access to civilised and safe protection. Instead, the party advocates for upholding the fundamental right to asylum and implementing the concept of safe third countries.

Varadkar emphasised Ireland’s willingness to engage in negotiations with non-EU countries to enhance support and security for individuals irregularly entering the EU, with the aim of processing asylum applications from various nations. However, he declined to disclose the names of these overseas countries, citing the need for confidentiality during negotiations.

The EPP seeks to establish agreements with transit countries, through which migrants often travel to reach the EU, including many Gulf nations. Additionally, during the meeting, Ursula von der Leyen was re-nominated as the EPP candidate for the presidency of the European Commission.

In expressing his support for von der Leyen’s re-nomination, Varadkar praised her performance during her first term and expressed Ireland’s willingness to provide her with a second opportunity to lead the European Commission.
