Government communication campaign for immigrants… more employees… safer countries

Dublin: The government is taking proactive steps to address refugee-related issues through a comprehensive communication campaign and an expansion of staffing.

The Cabinet Committee on Migration has made the decision to broaden the list of safe countries and is entrusting Justice Minister Helen McEntee with the task of facilitating this process. To enhance communication and integration efforts at both local and national levels, additional staff will be recruited. A senior civil servant will be appointed to spearhead these initiatives.

This move comes in the wake of previous attempts by the government, initiated a year ago, to launch a communication campaign aimed at disseminating factual information regarding immigration matters to the public. However, this scheme, orchestrated by the Prime Minister’s Department, failed to materialise, drawing criticism from both opposition and government parties alike, who argued that the government’s communication strategy regarding immigration lacked efficacy.

Ministers emphasised the importance of steering clear of divisive narratives surrounding immigration and instead advocated for campaigns that underscore the significant contributions of migrants to Ireland’s essential sectors. With approximately 400,000 migrants actively engaged in fields such as healthcare, hospitality, technology, and pharmaceuticals, the government aims to debunk misconceptions and reassure the public that asylum seekers represent only a fraction of this demographic.

Concerns over escalating tensions surrounding refugee issues were also discussed at the sub-committee meeting, with recognition that such tensions could potentially instill fear and apprehension among other migrant workers. In response, the government is poised to address these concerns through comprehensive communication strategies and proactive engagement with the public.
