An Bord Pleanála Proposes Lifting Restrictions on Night-Time Flights at Dublin Airport, Extending Operating Hours
Dublin: An Bord Pleanála has proposed lifting restrictions on night-time flights at Dublin Airport, allowing the North Runway to operate for an additional two hours. The decision, which follows Fingal County Council’s 2022 ruling, removes the cap on flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., replacing it with a night-time noise quota between 11.30 p.m. and 6 a.m. The draft decision allows take-offs and landings until midnight and from 6 a.m. on the North Runway, subject to certain conditions.
Opponents, including local residents and environmental groups, appealed the decision, citing noise concerns. However, the board concluded that the development would not significantly harm nearby properties, despite acknowledging potential impacts on human health and increased noise disturbances. To mitigate these effects, a noise insulation scheme for affected homes is proposed.
The easing of restrictions is backed by airlines, business groups, and cargo operators, who argue that limits on night flights could hurt Dublin Airport’s competitiveness. The decision follows a recommendation from the Aircraft Noise Competent Authority, which called for relaxed restrictions and sound insulation for homes exposed to noise above 55 decibels.
