Nearly 40% of Water Supply Lost to Leakages in 2022, Reveals Report..

Dublin: The Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) revealed that almost 40% of water intended for households and businesses in 2022 was lost due to leaks. Uisce Éireann lost 626 million litres daily, about 37% of its total supply. The CRU expressed concern that Uisce Éireann is not on track to meet its target of reducing leakage by 161 million litres per day by the end of 2024. Leakage savings dropped from 41 million litres daily in 2021 to 11 million in 2022. Additionally, 12 million litres of water were classified as “unaccounted for,” while 17 million litres were used for operational purposes.

The First Fix Scheme, which repairs leaks, saved 30 million litres daily in 2022, a rise from 14 million the previous year, likely due to resumed leak repairs post-COVID-19. However, only 46% of customers responded to notifications about potential leaks on their properties.

Uisce Éireann served over 1.8 million customers in 2022, with an average household consuming 345 litres per day. The top 10% of metered households used 35% of all water, while the top 1%, approximately 16,000 homes, accounted for 13% of total consumption.
