Indian Born Somi Thomas Elected to Board of Ireland’s Highest Nursing Authority, NMBI

Dublin: Indian-born Somi Thomas has secured a position on the Board of Directors of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), the country’s highest nursing authority. A prominent figure within the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), Somi received significant backing from the INMO and other key nursing organizations. Her involvement in the field is extensive, having served on the organising committee for this year’s INMO Annual Delegate Conference, which further solidified her support base.

Somi Thomas currently works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Dublin’s Bon Secour’s Hospital. She brings a wealth of experience, having previously held roles such as Nurse Manager and Staff Nurse at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital Dublin, Beaumont Hospital Dublin, as well as in nephrology and the medical ICU at Kerala’s Medical Trust Hospital. Her impressive academic background includes a diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery from Medical Trust Hospital, Kerala, as well as a BSc in Nursing. She has also earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Infection Prevention and Control, a Professional Diploma in Clinical Leadership, a Postgraduate Diploma in Respiratory Nursing, and an MSc in Respiratory Nursing from RCSI Dublin. Additionally, she has completed the Foundations in Critical Care Nursing course at UCD, Dublin.

Somi’s election continues the strong representation of Indian professionals on the governing body of the NMBI. She will fill the vacancy left by Shalbin Joseph, whose term concludes in January. Mittu Shibu Alungal, another Indian board member, also continues to serve, ensuring the continuation of significant Indian participation in the leadership of Ireland’s nursing sector.
