Speculation on Future of Three-Party Coalition as New Polling Data Emerges

Dublin: As political discussions heat up across Ireland, questions are being raised about whether the current coalition of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Green Party will form the next government. The latest Business Post/Red C poll suggests the Green Party may be ousted from government, with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael possibly able to govern together again. Fianna Fáil’s support has risen by three percentage points to 21%, while Fine Gael has seen a slight decline, down one point to 22%. Support for the Green Party continues to drop, slipping by one percentage point to just 3%, a trend causing concern within the party.

Green Party Reflects on the Future of Coalition

Party leader Roderic O’Gorman has voiced his concerns, stating that the Green Party’s participation has contributed significantly to the coalition’s successes over the past four and a half years, citing achievements such as reduced public transport fares and the launch of new bus services to combat pollution. O’Gorman acknowledges that the Green Party will assess its position and potential alliances post-election should the current coalition dissolve.

Despite these achievements, the Green Party has faced public criticism, with some voters and right-wing groups perceiving its policies as polarising, particularly regarding education reforms and immigration measures. O’Gorman remains committed to the alliance, arguing that the coalition has delivered strong governance for Ireland.

Sinn Fein’s Decline in Popularity

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin’s support continues to decline, now standing at 27%, a ten-point drop over the past six months. Recent allegations of sexism within Sinn Féin’s leadership have garnered significant media coverage, overshadowing other political matters. Some party supporters suggest that the administration’s use of RTÉ to revisit past events is impacting Sinn Féin’s image in the lead-up to the election, yet the party’s core support remains intact.

Other Parties’ Standing

The Social Democrats’ support has fallen by one point to 5%, while Labour (4%), Independents (15%), and People Before Profit-Solidarity (3%) have held steady. Support for an independent Ireland has risen by one point to 5%, while Aontú’s support has declined by one point to 3%.
