Nurses Vote for Strike Amid Ongoing Staff Shortage Crisis
Dublin: Nurses across Ireland have overwhelmingly voted to strike in response to the government’s and Health Service Executive’s (HSE) failure to address chronic staff shortages. Members of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), Fórsa, and Unite have given their unions a mandate to proceed, with strike notices potentially to follow shortly.
Under current regulations, unions must provide at least three weeks’ notice before initiating industrial action. If the strike proceeds, it will pose a significant challenge for the incoming government.
Union Votes Signal Frustration
Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO): 95.6% of members voted in favour of strike action. INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha indicated the union’s Executive Council will review the decision and consult with other labour organisations within the healthcare sector.
Fórsa: 93.6% of members supported the strike. Ashley Connolly, Head of Fórsa’s Health and Welfare Division, said the vote reflects employees’ growing frustration with persistent understaffing and daily challenges. The union’s divisional executive will convene next week to discuss next steps.
Unite: Regional Officer Eoin Drummey emphasised that ensuring a safe staffing pattern is the only way to avoid strike action.
Unions have pointed to recruitment restrictions and the removal of posts within the HSE as key contributors to excessive pressure on healthcare services, endangering patient safety. The INMO highlighted the significant strain these factors place on the workforce, describing the current situation as untenable.
HSE Responds
The HSE expressed disappointment over the strike vote, asserting that additional funding and staff increases have been implemented. A spokesperson confirmed the HSE’s commitment to resolving the dispute through dialogue with trade unions as soon as formal strike notice is received.
