Dublin: Frequent IT disruptions are creating significant challenges for Ireland’s major banks, with Bank of Ireland’s online banking operations recently brought to a standstill by technical issues. The outage occurred on one of the busiest shopping days of the year, just weeks before Christmas, leaving hundreds of customers frustrated.
Bank of Ireland confirmed delays affecting its mobile app and online banking platform, 365 Online. Customers attempting to complete transactions were unable to do so, and those accessing online banking via other platforms also faced difficulties. Additionally, money transfers from AIB to Bank of Ireland accounts were disrupted.
The issue was resolved after several hours, and the bank issued an apology for the inconvenience caused to customers.
This incident follows a similar technical failure at Permanent TSB (PTSB) just two weeks ago. That outage caused significant delays in processing payments, including salaries and pensions, leaving customers unable to send or receive funds. While PTSB eventually resolved the issue, it highlighted the growing concern over the resilience of banking IT systems in Ireland.
With IT failures becoming increasingly frequent, the disruptions are sparking calls for banks to strengthen their infrastructure and ensure reliable services, particularly during critical periods like the holiday season.
