Repairs to Holyhead Port May Extend Beyond Christmas, Disrupting Travel and Trade
Dublin: Holyhead Port, severely damaged by Storm Daragh, is likely to remain closed for longer than anticipated, causing significant disruption during the busy Christmas season. The dolphin platform, a crucial structure used to stabilise ships during docking, has sustained extensive damage and requires time-consuming repairs. According to authorities, an official cost estimate for the repairs has yet to be prepared, and preliminary inspections by underwater crews are still underway.
The indefinite delay in reopening the port has left local residents and businesses increasingly frustrated. Holyhead Port is a vital hub for travel and trade between the UK and Ireland, and its closure during the holiday season has disrupted the plans of thousands of travellers and cargo shipments. Approximately 33,000 vehicles, carrying around 100,000 passengers—many of them travelling by car—typically use this route over the Christmas period.
While the port was initially expected to reopen before December 20, authorities have now indicated that this is no longer feasible. The extended closure raises concerns about the economic impact on the region, with fears of layoffs among those employed in port-related businesses.
Speaking on the matter, Ireland’s Minister of State for Transport, James Lawless, stated that the timeline for reopening the port is beyond the government’s control. He assured, however, that the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Welsh authorities have been requested to implement alternative travel arrangements for affected passengers.
Ferry operators have also responded to the crisis. Stena Line is actively contacting passengers with bookings up to December 20 and has announced a new route between Fishguard and Dublin to accommodate travelers. Similarly, Irish Ferries has deployed additional vessels on alternative routes, such as Rosslare to Pembroke, to increase passenger capacity and minimise disruptions.
Efforts are also underway to reroute goods originally destined for Holyhead to other ports. However, the prolonged closure is expected to increase costs and delays, further straining businesses and trade.
