Heavy Snow Disrupts Funerals, Community Bands Together to Honour Deceased Grandmother
Tipperary: The severe snowfall gripping Ireland has led to the postponement of funerals in several areas, including Tipperary. In Clonoulty village, the funeral of Bridie Hammersley, a beloved grandmother, faced significant challenges due to the harsh weather conditions.
Bridie Hammersley passed away last week, and her funeral was scheduled for yesterday morning. However, heavy snow rendered roads to the church and surrounding areas impassable, leaving her family distressed about how to proceed.
In an inspiring show of community spirit, friends and neighbours came together to ensure the funeral could take place. Eight tractors and numerous volunteers armed with shovels worked tirelessly to clear the roads, churchyard, and surrounding areas. Within two hours, the path was cleared, and the uncertainty surrounding the service was resolved.
The funeral and cremation proceeded smoothly, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the community. Timmy Hammersley, Bridie’s grandson, expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of support, calling the cooperation “incredible.”
“Grandma was someone who never troubled anyone,” Timmy said. “Though the bad weather disrupted her funeral, everyone came together to give her the farewell she deserved.”
The Hammersley family extended their heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to honouring Bridie’s memory, highlighting the remarkable unity and kindness shown by the community during a challenging time.
