Coalition Increases Ministerial Appointments to Record High to Ensure Cabinet Stability
Dublin: Ireland’s coalition partners have agreed to increase the number of ministers to an unprecedented 23, aiming to strengthen the cabinet’s stability and address the expanding responsibilities of government. This includes the appointment of three new Ministers of State.
Cabinet and Ministerial Roles
Several existing cabinet ministers are expected to retain their positions:
- Jack Chambers: Minister for Finance.
- Dara O’Brien: Minister for Housing.
- Norma Foley: Minister for Education.
- Charlie McConalogue: Minister for Agriculture.
Additionally, newly elected TD Catherine Ardagh is anticipated to be appointed as a Super Junior Minister, adding to the government’s leadership team.
On the Fine Gael side, the following positions are likely to remain unchanged:
- Paschal Donohoe: Minister for Public Expenditure.
- Helen McEntee: Minister for Justice and Home Affairs.
Several junior ministers from Fine Gael are vying for cabinet positions, reflecting the party’s effort to ensure balanced representation across portfolios.
New Ministerial Appointments
The newly created ministerial roles will oversee key areas of national importance, including:
- Marine Affairs.
- Elderly Welfare.
- Immigration Policies.
A government spokesperson highlighted that the decision to expand the cabinet is essential in light of evolving challenges, demographic shifts, and the needs of a growing population.
Coalition Consultations and Approval Process
The coalition parties are set to hold five regional meetings across the country in the coming days to discuss the draft government programme. The final National Committee Ard Fheis will convene in Dublin on Sunday to approve the document, which will formally pave the way for Micheál Martin to be elected as Taoiseach in the Dáil next Wednesday.
Independent Ministerial Roles
Members of the Regional Independent Group, including Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, Martin Harkin, and Michael Healy-Rae, will also take on independent ministerial roles, reflecting the coalition’s commitment to broad representation.
