Teenager Found Guilty of Attempted Murder of Military Chaplain in Galway
Dublin: A 17-year-old boy has been found guilty of attempting to murder a military chaplain in Galway. The verdict was delivered in court, with Justice Paul McDermott adjourning the case to March 7 to allow for a probation report from Oberstown Detention Centre. A date for sentencing will be set at a later stage.
The incident occurred on August 15, 2024, when the accused—who was 16 years old at the time—stabbed Fr. Paul Murphy, aged 50, while he was sitting in his car at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, Renmore Barracks, in Galway.
Fr. Murphy, a renowned chaplain with the 1st Infantry Battalion, sustained multiple stab wounds during the attack. He was subsequently hospitalised and received treatment at Galway University Hospital, where he has been recovering from his injuries.
The court has stated that Fr Murphy will be invited to provide a victim impact statement before sentencing.
