UK Begins Deportations, 1,000s of Indians Among Illegal Immigrants….
Belfast: Recent statistics indicate that Indian nationals constitute one of the largest groups of illegal immigrants in the UK, with reports suggesting that some Indian institutions may also be involved. These revelations emerge as part of the UK government’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration, spearheaded by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Authorities have been particularly shocked by the scale of illegal employment in Indian-owned businesses, including restaurants, nail bars, convenience stores, and car washes. The crackdown has uncovered thousands of undocumented workers in these establishments, highlighting the widespread nature of the issue.
Surge in Immigration Raids
The Home Office reported that in January alone, 828 immigration enforcement raids were conducted across various locations in the UK. In one instance, seven individuals were arrested at an Indian restaurant in Humberside, Northern England, with four subsequently detained.
Statistics indicate a 48% increase in immigration raids compared to January 2023, resulting in 609 arrests. Thousands of individuals have also been issued warning notices, with authorities warning that failure to provide a legitimate explanation could lead to further arrests.
The Home Office further disclosed that these operations primarily targeted restaurants, takeaways, cafés, food processing facilities, and the tobacco industry.
Raids and Deportations in Line with New Immigration Law
The UK government’s new Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill aims to crack down on criminal gangs and improve border enforcement. The recent spike in raids and deportations is seen as a precursor to the new legislation.
Eddie Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance, and Crime at the Home Office, revealed that January marked a record high in the deportation of foreign and migrant offenders. The crackdown comes as the Labour government prepares for the second reading of its immigration bill in Parliament this week.
Record-Breaking Deportations Since July 2024 Election
Since the July 2024 general election, the UK government has deported 16,400 individuals, including those convicted of serious crimes. Deportation efforts have included large-scale charter flights, with over 800 individuals repatriated in four of the largest migrant return operations in UK history.
Among those deported were criminals convicted of drug offences, theft, rape, and murder. Officials have emphasised that the government remains committed to enforcing immigration laws and preventing exploitation of undocumented workers.
Tougher Measures Against Illegal Immigration
Authorities have stressed the importance of respecting and enforcing immigration laws. Montgomery stated that the latest figures reflect a firm commitment to cracking down on those who exploit the UK’s immigration system.
As part of the broader strategy to deter illegal migration, the government has launched social media campaigns targeting key migrant-sending countries. Anti-immigration advertisements have been placed on Vietnamese social media platforms in December and Albanian platforms in January.
New Law to Strengthen Law Enforcement Powers
The Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill introduces enhanced enforcement measures aimed at dismantling organised crime networks involved in human trafficking. Among the key provisions of the new legislation is the power to seize mobile phones before arrest, enabling authorities to take more decisive action against offenders.
With the new law set to be debated in Parliament, the government remains steadfast in its mission to tackle illegal migration and reinforce border security.
