Dublin Bus Employees Begin Strike Over Equal Pay Demand as Talks Loom
Dublin: Dublin Bus employees have commenced a strike demanding equal pay, with negotiations expected to take place in the coming days to resolve the dispute. Engineering employees are participating in the strike on a work-to-rule basis, continuing to carry out maintenance and public works to ensure buses remain available for public transport services. However, the strike is anticipated to impact bus services.
The Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU) has accused Dublin Bus of refusing to grant equal pay to engineering employees in line with their higher-grade traffic operative colleagues. SIPTU sector organiser John Murphy stated that the management’s failure to treat employees fairly left workers with no alternative but to strike. An independent agency review report has also recommended the implementation of pay equity.
In November, the Labour Court had declined to recommend a 14.5% pay increase without corresponding productivity improvements. However, the court did advise that an agreement on a 4.5% pay increase be finalised.
