Trial of Deepa Dinamani’s Murder Continues in Cork Court
Cork: The trial of Regin Rajan (43) for the murder of his wife, Deepa Dinamani (38), continues at the Central Criminal Court in Cork, with shocking and emotional revelations emerging. The court has heard evidence suggesting the murder was premeditated and that Rajan left behind a handwritten note near Deepa’s body, which hints at suspicions of an extramarital affair.
The case is being heard by a 12-member jury, presided over by Justice Siobhán Lankford.
Murder Investigation and Discovery of Evidence
Deepa Dinamani, a chartered accountant of Indian origin, had moved to Ireland with her husband and their five-year-old son just four months prior to her death. On July 14, 2023, she was discovered brutally murdered in her home at Cardinal Court, Wilton, Cork City, with deep wounds to her neck.
During the trial, the investigating officer revealed that a letter written by Regin Rajan was found near her blood-soaked body, which lay naked and covered in a duvet in the bedroom. The letter, though partially illegible, contained an apology for his actions and an appeal for forgiveness from their son. It also accused Deepa of having an affair, identifying a specific individual.
Other crucial evidence recovered from the crime scene included:
- The murder weapon, a knife.
- A broken gold necklace and a wedding ring.
- A bloodstained T-shirt and shorts found inside a bag in the bedroom.
- Multiple forensic swabs collected from Deepa’s body.
The prosecution presented evidence indicating that the murder was premeditated.
- Rajan had purchased the knife used in the crime two days prior, on July 12, from a Tesco store in Wilton Shopping Centre.
- CCTV footage from the store confirmed the purchase.
- Rajan also bought a bottle of whiskey and a soft drink, using a Tesco Clubcard, linking him directly to the transaction.
Confession to Gardaí
Following the murder, Regin Rajan himself reported the crime.
- He called the Garda control room on Anglesea Street, Cork, and confessed to killing his wife.
- The call was recorded, and Rajan identified himself, stating that he wanted to be arrested.
- He also informed Gardaí that his five-year-old son was in the house at the time.
- When instructed to stay on the line, Rajan abruptly ended the call.
Upon arrival at the Cardinal Court residence, Garda officers discovered:
- Deepa’s body wrapped in a duvet, covered in blood, and frozen.
- Rajan waiting inside the house, seemingly calm.
- He complied with Garda instructions, kneeling with his hands behind his back upon arrest.
- His responses to questioning were subdued and quiet.
The trial remains ongoing, with further witness testimonies expected in the coming days.
