Cork: Regin Rajan, the 43-year-old husband of Deepa Dinamani, a 38-year-old chartered accountant, has admitted to fatally stabbing his wife in their home in Cardinal Court, Wilton, Cork City. During his ongoing trial at Cork Central Criminal Court, Rajan confessed that he took his wife’s life with a single stab wound after discovering what he described as her infidelity.
Marital Discord and Motive Behind the Murder
Rajan stated in court that he had been struggling with marital problems and was devastated upon finding intimate messages on Deepa’s phone. He alleged that Deepa was engaged in an affair with someone in London, which led him to lose control and commit the crime.
The couple had moved to Cork from India with their young son just four months prior to the incident, seeking employment opportunities. Deepa had previously worked in the United Kingdom before joining Alter Domus Fund Services in Cork as a senior manager in April 2023.
A neighbour testified that Rajan had confided in him about his troubled marriage and had once come to his house in tears, unable to cope with the difficulties in his relationship. The funds director at Deepa’s company, Keith Whitney, also noted that while she was highly competent at work, there were indications of personal struggles in her marriage.
Forensic Findings and Cause of Death
Chief State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan provided gruesome details about the injuries Deepa sustained:
- She suffered a 14cm deep stab wound to the neck, which was fatal.
- The wound severed muscles, the thyroid artery, and the windpipe, causing significant blood loss.
- Blood was also found inside her lungs, contributing to her death.
- There was a 6.8cm wound on her left wrist, along with multiple bruises and scars, indicating possible previous violence.
- The weapon used was a 132cm steel knife, with a 20 cm-long, 2.5 cm-wide blade.
Dr. Mulligan confirmed that the severe wound to her throat rendered her unable to speak, and her body was discovered in a blood-covered bedroom.
Regin Rajan’s Confession: A Crime of Passion
In his statement, Rajan expressed remorse but justified his actions as a result of emotional distress:
“Deepa was cheating. She was having an affair with someone in London. I saw the messages on her phone—they were disgusting. I couldn’t bear it. I lost control. I stabbed her in the neck. She was the love of my life, but my marriage was falling apart. I lost 15kg in two months. I was depressed. I never intended to do it, but after seeing those messages, I couldn’t control myself. I am ready to accept any punishment. I committed a crime.”
The trial continues, with further proceedings expected in the coming days.
