Nearly 3,000 Drivers Caught Speeding Over Bank Holiday Weekend
Dublin: Gardaí recorded almost 3,000 speeding offences during a road safety operation over the June bank holiday weekend. The highest speed was clocked at 188km/h on the M50 near Templeogue, well above the 100km/h limit. Additional violations included excessive speeds in Kildare and Meath.
Over 4,000 breath tests and 270 oral fluid tests were conducted, resulting in 167 arrests for suspected intoxicated driving. One road fatality and 14 serious collisions, causing life-threatening injuries, were reported.
Authorities also issued 210 fixed charges for mobile phone use while driving, over 215 for unaccompanied learner drivers, and 70 for seatbelt offences. Gardaí seized 99 vehicles from unaccompanied learner drivers and 380 for lack of tax or insurance.
Gardaí continue to urge all motorists to drive responsibly and obey road safety laws.
