Anti-Immigrant Riots Continue to Escalate Across Northern Ireland
Belfast: Unrest continues to grip Northern Ireland as anti-immigrant riots sparked by a reported sexual assault incident involving three immigrants show no signs of abating. Violent clashes have now spread to multiple towns and cities, prompting widespread concern from law enforcement and public officials.
On Thursday night, 63 officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) were injured during violent disturbances in Portadown, where rioters launched petrol bombs and other projectiles at police units, including those deployed from Great Britain to assist in controlling the escalating situation.
Shocking video footage has emerged showing officers engulfed in flames as they attempted to disperse crowds and restore order. Rioting continues unabated in Ballymena, where the unrest initially began earlier in the week. In Coleraine, a particularly disturbing incident occurred in which a family with young children was targeted in an arson attack. The victims were evacuated safely, but their home sustained serious damage.
Additional clashes have been reported in several areas, including Templemore Avenue in East Belfast, as the wave of violence spreads. Anti-immigration protests are being held in towns across Northern Ireland, many of which have escalated into confrontations with police and damage to public property. In Portadown, a protest rally held on Thursday evening is believed to have triggered the night’s violence. In response, Translink has rerouted multiple bus services in affected areas for safety reasons.
Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson confirmed that there would be a significant police deployment across Northern Ireland through the weekend. Authorities are also actively investigating incendiary and hateful posts circulating on social media, believed to be contributing to the unrest.
Liam Kelly, Chair of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland, condemned the attacks and called for an immediate end to violence against officers. “This level of hostility towards those protecting the public is entirely unacceptable,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the head of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive expressed serious concern for the safety of residents, particularly vulnerable families, as targeted attacks increase. Officials have reiterated the need for calm and urged communities to refrain from vigilantism and hate-driven aggression.
The situation remains volatile, and law enforcement agencies continue to appeal for public cooperation to restore peace and prevent further harm.
