Primark to Cut 150 Jobs and Outsource Roles to Indian Firm Accenture
Dublin: Global fashion retailer Primark, known as Penneys in the Republic of Ireland, has announced plans to lay off 150 employees, including 100 at its Dublin headquarters. The remaining 50 positions will be cut across its UK and US operations. The company is outsourcing a portion of its back-office functions to Mumbai-based consultancy and IT services firm Accenture.
The affected roles are primarily in the HR, finance, and procurement departments. Primark currently employs around 1,500 staff in Dublin, meaning approximately 7% of its Irish workforce will be impacted by the restructuring.
In a statement, a Primark spokesperson said the company is evolving its operating model to support continued international growth. “As part of this transition, certain support functions will be outsourced to Accenture in Mumbai,” the spokesperson confirmed. “We have begun a collective consultation process, and unfortunately, this decision will negatively affect some colleagues based at our head office.”
The announcement has sparked concern among political representatives and workers’ advocates. Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary expressed regret over the job losses and assured that the Department of Social Protection would offer comprehensive support to affected employees. “We will assist workers in identifying new job opportunities and, if needed, provide upskilling and training support,” he said.
Labour Party TD Marie Sherlock called the decision “devastating”, urging the company to reconsider. “Penneys is not just a successful retailer — it is a cherished Irish brand. Every possible intervention should be made to safeguard these jobs,” she said.
